CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a slightly altered form of the essential fatty acid linoleic acid and may help maintain an optimal balance between lean muscle and fat. Controlled scientific studies have shown that supplementing with CLA may favourably affect body composition. Scientists hypothesize that CLA, possibly acting to enhance metabolic activity at the cellular membrane level, may allow those who supplement with CLA, exercise, and follow a healthy lifestyle to lose fat and gain muscle definition faster.

CLA may work in the body via a process known as repartitioning, in which the CLA is said to help switch calories from food into healthy muscle tone tissue whilst helping the body to burn stored fat cells.
